The Role As Lead Design Engineer you will act as the senior technical authority, directing design, supplier management, delivery, commissioning and lifecycle support activities for design/make of global Bodycote HIP hot zone systems. Leading the design engineering team entails directing project management from concept to internal customer handover, and ensuring high-quality, consistent outputs on time and within budget. In addition, you will ensure alignment of design with business goals and become a specialist in holistic HIP system behaviour. You report to Head of Engineering, HIP Europe. The key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following: Mentoring and directing team members & conducting performance reviews etc. Implementing structure & best practices in design functional management Define & select appropriate design tool sets, and embed standards/guidelines Ensure design data is correctly configuration controlled & managed using PLM principles Managing projects, setting priorities, and ensuring work aligns with timelines, budgets and product performance expectations. Working with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering teams to align designs with business goals and documenting design decisions appropriately Ensure solutions are technically & economically feasible, meeting safety/legal standards Travel to HIP sites when needed to support production delivery, problem solving and improvement, and visit suppliers as necessary Who We’re Looking For We’re looking for someone who brings: Strong experience of the engineering design process & disciplines over several years Ability to read, write, and speak English and Swedish Degree in mechanical design engineering or equivalent experience Experience working with complex mechanical components & assemblies Proficiency in 3D CAD, design data control, finite element analysis systems etc. Good team player with collaborative attitude and a flexible approach Self-motivated, organised and able to work under pressure to a schedule Good problem solving skills, receptive to different viewpoints Advantageous characteristics: Team leadership Experience of SOLIDWORKS Experience working with heat treatment, gas handling, & complex tooling Understanding of gas behaviour, heat & mass transfer Experience of design & risk reduction techniques like DFMEA What’s In It for You Career progression opportunities within a global organisation Exposure to international projects and change initiatives A supportive, inclusive culture where your development matters The opportunity to help shape the next chapter of our business Competitive salary and benefits package Location & Work Pattern This role is a full time, permanent position based in Surahammar, with hybrid expectations. When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
