In order to work in Ireland a non-EEA National, unless they are exempted, must hold a valid employment permit. Please review the Eligibility and requirements for an employment permit if you are unsure of your eligibility to apply for this vacancy. Do you enjoy balancing technical fieldwork with meaningful ecological impact? Are you ready to lead surveys, mentor early-career colleagues, and deliver high-quality reports? Are you looking for a role that offers variety, autonomy, and the chance to shape your ecological career? We’re looking for a Senior Ecologist to join Woodrow (part of the APEM Group) in Ireland. This is an exciting opportunity to take the next step in your consultancy career—delivering high-quality ecological assessments, leading fieldwork across diverse Irish habitats, and contributing to nationally significant environmental projects. You will work with other ecology professionals in our office in Sligo. Around 50% of your time will involve fieldwork, including travel across Ireland (and occasionally Northern Ireland or the UK), so confidence working in dynamic, outdoor settings is key. As a Senior Ecologist, you’ll lead survey programmes, deliver technical reports (e.g. EcIA, AA Screening, NIS, EIAR), manage small to mid-sized projects, and guide junior ecologists. You’ll also have opportunities to contribute to tender writing, service development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with experts across the wider APEM Group. To be successful in this role, you’ll need: A third-level qualification in Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology, Botany, or a related field 3–5+ years of experience in ecological consultancy or similar Strong field survey skills and working knowledge of Irish flora and fauna Experience producing ecological impact assessments and technical reports aligned with Irish planning law A good understanding of Irish and EU legislation (Habitats Directive, Birds Directive, Planning and Development Act) Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal Ability to manage projects independently, including budgets, schedules, and client relationships A full clean EU driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork Bonus points for: CIEEM Associate Membership (or eligibility), and interest in progressing toward Full Membership or Chartership Experience managing field teams and mentoring junior staff Familiarity with GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS) First Aid or remote fieldwork safety training (training can be provided) You will be offered the chance to work on a variety of projects, many of our employees have worked on projects that have been of personal interest to them. We match this with a commitment to continuous development and learning to support your career. We also offer benefits to look after you, from private medical insurance for all employees, access to mental health first aiders and comprehensive income protection if you cannot work. We also offer superb flexible working options, balancing work with your life.
