Systems Modeling & AI Research Engineer – Adaptive Security Systems Position: Systems Modeling & AI Research Engineer – Adaptive Security Systems Location: Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg Start Date: Immediate Type: Full-time Company Overview We're LuxQuantum, a Luxembourg-based deep-tech startup developing the next generation of quantum-safe communication systems. Our mission is to address one of the key challenges in modern cybersecurity: how to combine Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) into a unified, adaptive, and scalable security architecture. At LuxQuantum, we believe security decisions should not be static. Different data, infrastructures, risks, trust assumptions, and operational conditions may require different protection strategies. That's why we are developing intelligent and adaptive approaches to model these complex environments and support dynamic security and orchestration decisions. Our work brings together AI, systems modeling, cybersecurity, and quantum-safe communications, creating research challenges that span multiple scientific and engineering disciplines. We are a small and ambitious team of researchers, engineers, and innovators who enjoy exploring difficult problems, learning across disciplines, and turning research ideas into real-world technology. Role Overview As a Systems Modeling & AI Research Engineer, you will contribute to the research and development of the intelligence and decision-making capabilities behind LuxQuantum's adaptive quantum-safe security systems. You will investigate how complex security and communication systems can adapt to changing risks, uncertainty, trust requirements, infrastructure conditions, and operational constraints. Your work may involve mathematical and computational modeling, optimization, probabilistic methods, AI, or other data-driven and decision-support approaches. You will work closely with our research and engineering team to formulate research problems, explore and compare different approaches, develop models and algorithms, evaluate them through experiments and simulations, and translate promising results into working prototypes. The research sits at the intersection of systems modeling, intelligent decision-making, cybersecurity, and quantum-safe communications. What You'll Do • Investigate challenging research problems in intelligent and adaptive security systems • Formulate research questions, develop new approaches, and design experiments and simulations to evaluate them • Develop mathematical, computational, and AI-based models for decision-making under uncertainty, risk, and changing operational conditions • Explore adaptive approaches for the orchestration and optimization of hybrid quantum-safe systems • Design and evaluate methods that help security systems dynamically respond to changing infrastructure, trust, and operational requirements • Translate research ideas, models, and algorithms into working prototypes and validate them in realistic scenarios • Collaborate closely with researchers and engineers across software, AI, cybersecurity, and quantum technologies • Contribute to the technical direction, architecture, and documentation of LuxQuantum's research and development activities What We're Looking For • PhD in a quantitative, scientific, engineering, or computing-related field; or a Master's degree with strong relevant research or R&D experience • Strong research and analytical abilities, with the capacity to investigate complex problems, develop new approaches, and evaluate them systematically • Experience with quantitative, computational, modeling, optimization, AI/ML, or related research methods • Good programming and computational skills in one or more languages such as Python, C++, Rust, or similar • Ability to translate research ideas, mathematical models, or algorithms into working prototypes • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a small multidisciplinary team • Curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to learn and work across different technical domains • Understanding of startup environments and research-driven innovation • Fluent written and verbal communication in English We welcome candidates from different scientific, engineering, and computational backgrounds, including PhD graduates, postdoctoral researchers, and researchers interested in transitioning from academia to industrial R&D. Prior experience in quantum technologies or quantum-safe cybersecurity is welcome but not required.
