What you’ll do as a Software Engineer (C++) at Akuna: We are looking for motivated self-starters to join our engineering team in our Sydney office and contribute to our core trading platform. You will focus on analysis, design, implementation, and delivery of Akuna’s trading system using the latest technologies. A pragmatic approach to technology solutions using open source and proprietary software is required. Successful candidates will work closely with an industry-leading team of traders and quantitative researchers who participate fully in the design and ongoing enhancements to our proprietary trading platform. In this role, you will: Design and build mission critical and complex trading systems Plan, design and implement high quality Linux services using modern C++ technologies Build software using Agile methodologies Participate in design sessions and code reviews Work on cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and solve complex problems Qualities that make great candidates: 3+ years of experience developing high-performance, scalable applications in modern C++ A working knowledge C++17/20 and strong experience with template meta-programming is a plus Experience with Linux and Python required Understanding of distributed systems, data structures and algorithms, object-oriented design Practical use of multi-threaded/multi-core programming paradigms A curiosity about and demonstrated interest in the C++ language and modern CPU architecture is a plus Ability to take on projects and drive them through to completion Familiarity with trading and trading systems is a plus, though definitely not a requirement (we have internal training for this) Bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Engineering, Maths or equivalent

If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.

Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.

Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.

When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
