About the team Stripe Terminal helps Stripe users extend their online presence into the physical world. The Terminal team’s mission is to make it as easy for businesses to accept in-person payments as the Stripe API has done for online payments. With Terminal, businesses can unlock in-person payments use cases that are right for their business model, whether it’s creating a flagship retail experience, extending their website to a pop-up store, or enabling a mobile point of sale at their next event. What you’ll do We are looking for a Software Quality Assurance Engineer to join the Stripe Terminal Device Software Quality Assurance team. In this role, you will own the quality assurance process and results for firmware and device operating system components across our payment terminal devices. You'll work closely with software development teams to define quality standards, develop test strategies, and drive software quality improvements through technical expertise and process enhancements. Responsibilities Own software quality for Terminal device software components, including firmware and the device operating system, and ensure software quality targets are met for customers. Collaborate with developers during software planning, change review, and release meetings to understand new features, specifications, expected behaviors, and the impact and risks of changes. Create spot tests before branch cut. Deeply understand customer use cases, Product Requirements Documents, and Software Design Documents. Work with developers to create test plans that improve coverage across configurations, user scenarios, and reliability testing. Perform Bluetooth validation across multiple devices, edge cases, and recovery scenarios. Validate devices with enterprise network configurations and security types. Design and execute testing for power performance, battery behavior, sleep and wake reliability, and resilience under extended or degraded operating conditions. Design, build, and maintain lab setups and test environments that reflect production-like usage conditions and support repeatable validation. Co-lead software quality incident remediation with engineering teams, including root cause analysis and solution development. Establish and maintain software quality assurance processes, and influence cross-functional teams at Stripe and drive quality and process improvements. Create and optimize test cases. Collaborate with automation engineers to expand automated test coverage, guide manual software quality assurance team members in high-quality software testing, and mentor junior software quality engineers on technical skills, test design, work quality, and efficiency. Who you are We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. Minimum requirements Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field 4+ years of software quality assurance experience for embedded systems or firmware, including analyzing software changes and assessing their impact on test coverage by reviewing release notes and software design documents Experience developing test strategies, test plans, and test cases based on product requirements Ability to identify the root causes of software defects and proactively identify and mitigate risks Strong leadership, communication, ownership, and influencing skills to drive quality improvements across teams, along with excellent verbal and written English communication skills Preferred qualifications Experience with payment terminal devices, EMV certification, or Payment Card Industry compliance Knowledge of embedded systems, real-time operating systems, and firmware development Familiarity with payment processing systems or financial technology Track record of mentoring junior team members on technical skills and test design
