Staff Engineer Role summary Israel Hybrid Full-time The Modernization Team mandate is to identify and solve the deepest, most systemic architectural challenges in the platform problems that are too strategic and cross-cutting for any single product team to own, yet too impactful to leave unresolved. We are not a feature team. We do not own a single service or product surface. Instead, we operate as a platform-level force multiplier: we take on the hardest problems, build shared solutions and tooling, and enable every product team at Payoneer to move faster and more safely. This is a brand-new team being built from the ground up. You will have an outsized opportunity to shape how we work, what we prioritize, and the engineering culture we create together. What you’ll do As a Staff Software Engineer on the Modernization Team, you will tackle the deepest, most systemic architectural challenges in Payoneer’s platform owning end-to-end migrations, building shared infrastructure, and creating the tooling that enables every product team to move faster and more safely. The Modernization Team operates with a native agentic mindset this is not an add-on or an experiment; it is core to how we build. We apply AI-assisted development across every phase of our work: automated code generation, AI-driven migration scripts, intelligent test generation, code review, and documentation. Our goal is not just to write code faster it is to build tooling that multiplies the output of every engineer working on modernization challenges. Who You Are 6+ years of experience in backend engineering in Node.js with strong fundamentals and production experience. Solid experience and understanding of distributed systems: messaging, caching, microservice communication patterns, and failure modes. Experience with AWS cloud infrastructure comfortable with the ecosystem even if not expert level in every service. Ability to own complex technical work end to end, from design through production. Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, or equivalent) as a day-to-day engineering practice not a nice-to-have. Proven track record of driving architectural decisions with cross-team impact you have moved systems forward, not just improved them incrementally. Experience with large-scale migration programs: decomposing monoliths, rearchitecting data layers, or migrating messaging infrastructure in production environments. Strong communication skills; comfortable working across team boundaries. Nice to have: .NET background, especially if you have migrated services from .NET to a modern stack. Experience building or operating shared platform infrastructure consumed by multiple teams. Familiarity with event-driven architecture patterns: outbox pattern, saga pattern. #LI-LF1 The Payoneer Ways of Working Act as our customer’s partner on the inside Learning what they need and creating what will help them go further. That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
