Engineering Manager | ComparaJá.pt – Lisbon (Hybrid) Job Summary We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Engineering Manager to guide our development team in delivering high-quality software. You will own the delivery process end-to-end, ensuring that our products are built to modern development standards while fostering a culture of excellence and velocity. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software development, experience in coaching and mentoring teams, and a passion for optimising processes to drive efficiency. This is an office role based in Alvalade, Lisbon with flexibility to work remotely. Key Responsibilities Own the delivery of high-quality software: Lead the technical direction of projects, ensuring that software is delivered on time, meets business requirements, and adheres to the highest standards of performance, security, and scalability. Optimise development processes: Continuously review and improve the development lifecycle to increase efficiency, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance productivity. Coach and mentor developers: Provide hands-on technical guidance, mentorship, and support to the development team. Foster professional growth and engineering excellence through regular feedback, training, and knowledge sharing. Ensure modern development standards: Promote and implement best practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code reviews, and clean coding principles. Collaborate with cross-functional teams: Work closely with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to align technical decisions with business goals and ensure a shared vision across the product lifecycle. Technical leadership: Make critical decisions around architecture, tools, and frameworks, ensuring long-term scalability and maintainability of the codebase. Stay updated with industry trends: Continuously explore new technologies, frameworks, and methodologies to ensure the team is up-to-date with the latest advancements in software development. Especially concerning the ability to rapidly prototype ideas using AI. About You Proven experience as an Engineering Manager, Tech Lead, Senior Software Engineer, or similar role. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate with teams across the organisation. You have an analytical mindset to develop the best-fit technical solution. You have excellent leadership and decision-making skills, and knowledge of project management principles. You have an understanding of IT infrastructure, architecture, as well as a good understanding of non-technical parts of the business. You are comfortable working in an international environment. Skills Required: Experienced working through the design, development, release cycle, and delivering software products to market, with a track record of successful delivery of software applications as an individual and tech leader Experience with managing the development of SaaS and cloud-based applications Our stack is: C#, Python, Nuxt/VueJS, PostgreSQL, all on AWS. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
