As an Engineering Manager , you will lead an engineering team responsible for the backend platform powering one of the Netherlands' largest automotive marketplaces. You'll lead a team of approximately 5-6 engineers (currently supported by external engineers during an ongoing platform modernization). The team owns the core backend services that power the entire platform, including: Vehicle data ingestion from hundreds of external providers Backend services and business logic powering the platform Data matching, validation, enrichment and quality Search ranking and listing lifecycle management Click tracking, billing logic and fraud/bot protection Platform reliability, operational excellence and incident management The team is currently modernizing its backend platform, migrating from a legacy PHP/Scala stack to Java on AWS. What you'll do Lead, coach and develop a high-performing engineering team Partner closely with Product to define priorities and successfully deliver the roadmap Drive technical excellence, engineering quality and operational maturity Lead architecture and technical discussions across multiple teams Establish strong operational practices, including on-call processes, incident management and post-incident reviews Improve system reliability, scalability and performance for a business-critical platform Coordinate complex initiatives involving multiple engineering teams and external dependencies Foster a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, collaboration and continuous improvement Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives across AutoScout24 Group AI & Engineering Productivity Operate at a high level of efficiency using modern AI-assisted development tools Coach engineers on adopting AI to improve software quality and delivery speed Act as a role model for effective AI usage across engineering and leadership activities Identify opportunities to integrate AI throughout the software development lifecycle Support the team's AI maturity and adoption as part of its ongoing transformation Technical environment Java (primary language) Scala (legacy services) PHP (being phased out) AWS Kafka PostgreSQL Event-driven architecture Distributed backend systems What you'll bring 3+ years of experience leading software engineering teams Strong prior experience as a hands-on software engineer Experience building and operating large-scale backend or distributed systems Strong background in object-oriented programming (preferably Java) Experience leading architecture and technical decision-making Experience introducing and running operational excellence practices, including on-call rotations, incident response and postmortems Proven ability to deliver complex cross-team initiatives with multiple stakeholders Passion for coaching engineers and building high-performing teams Experience driving adoption of modern AI development practices within engineering teams is highly desirable A culture of growth With over 50 nationalities represented, we’re proud to welcome people of all backgrounds to our growing community. That number is real. WorkMundi's database shows 144,883 open engineer roles across the world. India has the most with 31,687 jobs, followed by the United States with 30,084. If you just finished reading one job ad and felt paralyzed by choice, you're not alone—but this scale is actually an advantage. It means you can afford to be selective.
Start by geography and language. The majority of engineer ads—117,837 of them—have the job posting text written in English. Use that as one filter, but remember: the ad text language tells you nothing about whether the role actually requires you to speak English day-to-day. Read the job description carefully. Then check which countries have the volume you're targeting. Singapore, Poland, and Australia round out the top five after India and the US.
Next, learn who's hiring. Accenture has posted 2,801 engineer roles. andurilindustries, speechify, and jobgether are also actively recruiting. If you're applying to one of these names, research their hiring patterns and interview style before you apply. That homework pays off.
When you interview, expect the question every engineer hears: 'Tell me about a time you had to debug a problem that wasn't in your job description.' Have a specific story ready—not a general one. Name the tools, the deadline pressure, and what you learned. Hiring managers listen for whether you see problem-solving as part of the role itself, not a favour.
